Nope! Calm Care relies on patience, gentle handling, clear communication, and low-stress techniques to help dogs feel more comfortable. We go at their pace—not the clock’s.

How do I know if my dog needs Calm Care?

If your dog shows signs of fear, stress, or resistance during grooming—like shaking, panting, hiding, or snapping—Calm Care might be a better fit. We’re happy to help you decide during your intake.

Is Calm Care only for small or older dogs?

Not at all. Dogs of any size, age, or breed can benefit from Calm Care if they struggle with the grooming process. We have techniques tailored for all types of dogs and sensitivities.

Can Calm Care help my dog get better with grooming over time?

Do I need to book Calm Care in advance?

At The Woof Wash, we believe grooming should never be rushed, forced, or traumatic. Calm Care is our specialized grooming approach for dogs who need additional behavioral support, patience, and individualized handling to help them feel safe and successful during grooming.

Whether your dog is fearful, anxious, reactive, overstimulated, has had a negative grooming experience, or simply needs extra time to build confidence, we adjust the grooming process to meet them where they are.

Is Calm Care Right For My Dog?

Calm Care may be recommended for dogs who:

Become anxious, fearful, or overstimulated during grooming
Bark, lunge, resist handling, or require a muzzle for safety
Have experienced previous grooming trauma
Are rescue dogs with an unknown grooming history
Need extra time, breaks, or slower introductions
Require a quieter, lower-stimulation environment
Benefit from calming techniques such as lick mats, music, positive reinforcement, or support from a second handler

Every Calm Care appointment is customized to your dog's individual needs. Depending on your dog, we may adjust the pace of the appointment, provide decompression breaks, modify handling techniques, use calming tools, or incorporate veterinarian-prescribed grooming medication when appropriate.

Throughout the appointment, we'll keep you updated on your dog's progress and provide a detailed behavior summary so we can continue improving each visit over time.

The best Calm Care appointments start before grooming even begins.

Whenever possible, we recommend calling to schedule a complimentary 30-minute Meet & Greet before your dog's first Calm Care appointment. This gives us an opportunity to meet your dog without the pressure of grooming, learn about their history, identify potential triggers, and determine what accommodations may help them feel most successful.

We also encourage complete honesty about your dog's behavior. Sharing concerns such as previous bites, fear, anxiety, muzzle use, medication, or difficult grooming experiences allows us to prepare appropriately and create the safest, most positive experience for everyone involved.

Our goal is never to judge your dog—it's to understand them.

If your dog is currently taking veterinarian-prescribed medication for grooming anxiety, or if we believe medication could help create a safer and less stressful experience, we're happy to work alongside your veterinarian's recommendations. Medicated pets require additional observation throughout their appointment, and we'll tailor their care accordingly.

Calm Care Pricing

Not every nervous dog requires Calm Care pricing. Many dogs simply need a little extra patience or a few minor adjustments, which we're happy to provide during a standard grooming appointment.

Calm Care modifications are reserved for dogs requiring significant additional time, specialized handling, behavioral accommodations, medication monitoring, a second handler, or individualized support beyond a typical grooming appointment.

Additional Calm Care fees typically range from $25-$125, depending on your dog's size, behavior, and level of support required. Most first-time Calm Care appointments begin with a $50 modification fee, which may decrease over time as your dog becomes more comfortable and requires fewer accommodations.

After your dog's first Calm Care appointment, we'll provide a detailed, in-person behavior summary so you always feel informed and empowered in your dog’s care. We will discuss

your dog's triggers, successful handling techniques, preferred calming strategies, and any safety accommodations so our team can provide consistent, individualized care at every visit.

Medication Support

Some dogs need a little extra help to feel safe and comfortable during grooming—and that's completely okay. Every dog is different, and needing medication is never something to be embarrassed about or judged for.

If we feel your dog's stress or anxiety is preventing them from having a safe, positive grooming experience, we may recommend speaking with your veterinarian about grooming medication. Our goal is always to reduce fear, prioritize safety, and make grooming as comfortable as possible for both your dog and our team.
